Derm Advice – Top 12 Skin Care Products You Must Avoid

Get rid of products with toxic ingredients.

Looking beautiful is one thing; causing havoc on your health while doing it is another. Before you buy any beauty product, make sure you’re not buying a product that would be deteriorating to your health. That you see them on the shelf doesn’t mean they are 100% safe to use. There was a time when lead was being used in the cosmetic industry, and this is one such example where having them on shelves doesn’t guarantee that they are the same. The bad news is that the FDA does not check the ingredients used by cosmetic companies, so they are free to use whatever ingredient they want. As a result, some of these ingredients to avoid in skin products that might have been linked to several health issues, like infertility, cancer, allergies, acne, rashes, and others.

Getting the long list of ingredients in several beauty products might be tiring and frustrating. Sites like EWG’s Skin Deep database might be handy to make the process easier. Their database allows you to search for a beauty product and get a list of ingredients used in making these products. Apps like Yuka also allow you to scan products to check if they contain any irritants, allergens, carcinogens, or endocrine disruptors. Although some of these apps or websites do not contain all the ingredients, to be on the safe side, you should use the help of a dermatologist.

Items you should avoid

1 Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

Cleaning agents such as sodium lauryl sulfate are quite prevalent and can be found in body washes, cleansers, and shampoos. Irritation is common with this product, as is the possibility of an allergic reaction to the skin. The skin might get dry and lose ceramide if SLS is not effectively removed from the skin. Castile soaps and cleansers are good options.

2 Methylisothiazolinone

Water-based products, such as shampoos and cleansers, typically contain the preservative methylisothiazolinone. If you have sensitive skin, you should stay away from this chemical completely.

3 Formaldehyde

To limit bacterial growth, formaldehyde is occasionally employed as a chemical preservative. It is considered that if individuals are exposed to high levels of this, they are more likely to acquire cancer.

4 Acrylates (ethyl acrylate, ethyl methacrylate, and methyl methacrylate)

Artificial nail products and false eyelashes commonly contain acrylates, which are used as adhesives and can cause allergies, while some may be carcinogenic. It's advisable to stay away from them or at least limit their use.

5 Fragrances

The vast majority of skincare products contain ingredients that can trigger adverse allergies in some people. Rashes, allergies, skin irritation, dizziness, pigmentation, cough, hyperactivity, and headaches can all be caused by synthetic perfumes. There is no law requiring the listing of all the ingredients used in making a fragrance.

6 Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is generally recognized as a good acne spot therapy. It worsens the breakout by clogging surrounding pores. Stay away from pure coconut oil, as well as face masks and moisturizers.

7 Triclosan

Triclosan, which is included in antibacterial soaps, has been heavily exposed to many of us in recent months. Triclosan should be avoided since it can lead to antibiotic-resistant microorganisms and has been linked to endocrine disruption.

8 Chemical Sunscreen

The absorption rates of chemical sunscreens are much higher than what is deemed safe. Oxybenzone, one of the ingredients, was absorbed at a rate of 188 times the permissible limit after just one use. Mineral sunscreen is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics because it does not absorb into the skin. As a result of its association with birth abnormalities, chemical sunscreen should be avoided during pregnancy.

9 Parabens

Paraben is an ingredient you must avoid at all cost. It is a petroleum derivative and can cause breast cancer. It is an endocrine disruptor, and can lead to infertility and hormonal imbalance. They are mostly listed as ethylparaben, butylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparabens. common in moisturizers and makeup.

10 Phthalates

Phthalates are commonly found in cosmetics, particularly perfumes, although they can also be found in skincare products. They're endocrine disruptors, which can lead to hormonal and reproductive issues, as well as birth defects.

11 Mineral Oil

This petroleum byproduct can be found in your cosmetics, sunscreen, and cleansers. It may contain carcinogenic compounds which, as we know from formaldehyde, are thought to increase the risk of cancer in humans when used in large doses.

12 Toluene

Toluene is a chemical found in many hair dyes and nail polishes. It's a highly flammable petrochemical solvent that can harm the immune system and result in birth abnormalities.
