The term'remote software development' refers to the implementation of software systems through the use of Internet. Unlike traditional software engineering, which involves the creation of software systems from scratch, remote software development requires little technical knowledge from the software engineers. In fact, compared to other fields, remote software development is particularly well suited for the purpose of being performed in a highly distributed way. Usually, a software project hardly ever needs physical presence. However, this doesn't mean that remote running software projects are any easier, or simpler than running traditional other forms of projects physically.

These communication tools and platforms vary from company to company, depending on the nature of the work to be performed, the skills of the employees handling the work, and the budgets of the organizations. The most common communication tools are email, telephonic phone conferences, conferencing, web conferences etc. Most organizations and businesses have an email system which they regularly utilize. Email conferences and webinars are also used by remote work programs.

In most Remote software project teams, a single senior-level employee works as the main contact for remote team members. The remote team leader meets the main team every so often to exchange technical information and progress updates. Communication takes place through email, telephone conferences, VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol), text chats, and regular face-to-face communication. Based on the technology deployed, this can either be a video conference or a combination of visual and audio conferencing.
